The Experience

A charming village pub and a great base from which to explore – stylish, welcoming, nicely priced. The Sunday lunch is fabulous with seasonal produce mostly sourced within 20 miles. In summer, you decant onto a big terrace with an outside bar and a wood-fired pizza oven.

There’s a duck pond, a lawned garden, views over open country, even a four-day festival in August (local bands, theatre, face painting, lots of food). Interiors have an easy style: woven willow lampshades, a sofa in front of the fire, a timber-framed dining room for fabulous food cooked with flair from ingredients sourced in Kent and East Sussex. Artisan bread, handmade charcuterie, succulent lamb, amazing asparagus and even a boutique gin.

Sleep in beautiful, uncluttered bedrooms with lovely fabrics, super beds, excellent bathrooms, a sofa if there’s room. Wake to homemade muesli with berry compote, sausage or bacon bap, croissants or a full English.

Location

The neighbourhood

The gardens at Sissinghurst Castle were designed by Vita Sackville-West. There are several other fine gardens nearby – Great Dixter, created by Christopher Lloyd, Pashley Manor or the Bedgebury Pinetum. Head down to Rye, taste wine at Chapel Down Vineyard, join a distillery tour and tasting at Anno gin, buy delicious food from Weald Smokery or Frankie's Farm Shop. Tunbridge Wells is a short drive.

Local points of interest from Sarah Allchorne

  • Sissinghurst is the perfect place for a family day out with the historic castle and gardens just half a mile's walk from The Milk House. Those interested in gardening can take part in one of the regular events organised by the National Trust.
  • From nearby Staplehurst, you can reach London by train in less than an hour. You’ll also find Frankie’s Farm Shop at Staplehurst Nurseries, selling plants, gifts and groceries and serving delicious lunches.
  • Kent is renowned for it’s vineyards. Sample the best of English wine with the award-winning Chapel Down Winery and Biddenden Vineyards on your doorstep both offering a variety of private tastings and tours.
  • Nearby town Tenterden is great for shopping with lots of interesting boutiques and cafes to explore. Tenterden is also the home of the Kent and East Sussex Railway, one of the country’s finest examples of a rural light railway.
  • You’re a 10-minute drive from Bedgebury Forest, ideal for cycling, riding, walks and picnics. Visit the National Pinetum, the world’s finest conifer collection or Go Ape in the treetops.
  • For rainy days there’s the Kino digital cinema in Hawkhurst, which shows a fine selection of art house films. There’s also the Trinity Theatre in Tunbridge Wells with an exciting schedule of theatre, music and comedy.

Introducing

Sarah Allchorne

Sarah and Dane rescued the former Bull Inn in 2013. Fuelled by passion, enthusiasm and great ideas, they've restored and refurbished the striking roadside building which dates back to the 16th century. It's now a thriving community hub with a busy bar and restaurant, four comfortable rooms and a great outdoor terrace with summer pizza oven.
