The Experience

A joy for couples looking for solid, understated style inside and rolling country walks and cycling from the door – without heading for the wilds. On the fringe of pretty Berkhamsted – with its castle, art-house cinema, tempting shops and cafés – there are glimpses of a sheep-dotted landscape beyond as you take the no through road at the top of Castle Hill. Here, the Groves’ handsome brick and timber Stables conversion stands near their magnificent Great Barn.

They’ve designed and organised the space so well you could happily live here. Sturdy oak floorboards are heated from below; lighting is elegant and discreet. There’s a good collection of DVDs and cookery books; a slick, well-equipped kitchen with breakfast stuff waiting and scrubbed dining table; a beautifully turned-out bed beneath the beams, and a snug bathroom with plump towels.

Wander into town in ten minutes for good places to eat, shop and explore.

Reviews

We had a relaxing, comfortable stay. 'The Stables' is beautifully set in the Chiltern Hills, only a short walk from the town with plenty of shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants and beautiful countryside. We commuted easily to London, as the train station only takes a short walk. The barn is very well acommodated and well maintained. Sarah and Tim are kind and helpful hosts.

Marleen, Gent

We had a lovely platinum jubilee break at the Stables. Sarah was really helpful and the place was spotlessly clean and had everything you would need including a BBQ. It's a good base to explore the area and there's some good walks and good pubs. We would happily return

Tim, London

Beautiful property in a beautiful town. Stable has everything you could think of and the view is amazing. Will definitely return soon. Thank you Sarah for your amazing communication as well!

Izel

I had a wonderful stay at The Stables, relaxing, quiet, in the countryside but still only a short walk to restaurants and coffee shops and to the lovely canal. I had everything I needed from breakfast items to a big comfortable bed, to a lovely shower with superb shower products, to an outdoor space to read my books. Would definitely return. Thank you Sarah for being a wonderful host.

Caroline, Bristol

10/10 Had an amazing stay at The Stables. Very tastefully decorated, super clean, comfy bed / linen and great views. The host also left us bread, orange juice and butter in the well equipped kitchen. Thanks for a great stay; highly recommended!

Ben, London

A former stable renovated to a very high standard, ideal for a couple looking for peace and quiet. Berkhamsted is a perfect centre for touring the Chilterns with several National Trust properties easily accessible.

David, Wells

We would definitely stay here again. Spacious, well equipped and cosy cottage. Thank you!

David, London

A wonderful wintery retreat! The Stables provided a perfect base whilst attending a 4 day show at Bury Farm Equestrian (approx 8 miles). Extremely comfortable, beautifully furnished with everything you need/want for any break away.. and was delightfully warm and cosy too! Ashridge Estate within easy reach - great for dog walks. Lots of thumbs up from two-legged and four-legged, alike!

Sara, Lincoln

The Stables turned out to be perfect for us as a "home away from home" for our extended one-month stay. It is beautifully appointed and has everything we needed to support our month-long exploration of the Chilterns AONB. It is a quiet and peaceful respite and the end of a busy day. It is convenient to the network of trails as well as a short walk to the train station for day trips to London and to interesting and enjoyable High Street. And Sarah and Tim top it all off as gracious and helpful hosts eager to share their beautiful home.

We found this a thoroughly comfortable, and well appointed home from home - a perfect retreat for those of us wanting to escape the noise of traffic and to be close to the country with wonderful views. Our hosts could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Just the place for a weekend away.

Robert, Winchester

What a beautiful, relaxing place to stay! The house is perfect for 2 - cosy, stylish, understated, comfortable, with a luxurious comfy bed that you won't want to leave. Sarah and Tim were incredibly kind, welcoming and helpful, and there are lovely walks straight from the front door, as well as Berkhamsted town very close by with good shops, lovely cafes and historic buildings aplenty. We'd thoroughly recommend the Stables for a lovely peaceful getaway.

Jacky, London

This cosy, converted barn is a perfect bolthole in the green fringes of London whether staying in or visiting the local area. Being so close to the main line, it can be used for a swift respite or a longer wind-down. Sarah and Tim are on-hand hosts and have made the nearby Great Barn their family home yet the Stables can be a secluded option if you prefer the peace and quiet. We would highly recommend staying there and are already considering a return in Spring.

Duncan, London

Lovely cottage, peaceful location, great for walking and cycling. Sarah and Tim were as generous as it's possible to be with their time and advice.

Michael, London

This is a wonderful place to escape to! It has everything you need for a relaxing and comfortable stay, including fresh breakfast so you don't need to bring anything with you. We loved being able to walk everywhere, both into town for dinner and across the beautiful countryside. We would happily stay again.

sam, Bucks

The stables is really well equipped with lovely extra touches like breakfast cereals and spreads, biscuits, coffee machine, bubble bath, cook books, iron and DVDs! The under floor heating is great too and the bed and bed linen really comfortable. The location is lovely too, right next to fields and amazing views but only a short walk to town. The owners recommended a great massage therapist who came to the stables - Christina Bustamante- one of the best massages I've ever had and reasonably priced too. The owners were also v flexible about arrival times which was really helpful for us.

Justine

We had a fabulous stay at The Stables. All the rooms are light, spacious and comfortable with impressive vaulted ceilings in the bedroom and sitting room. It was generously equipped with lots of pleasing little extras such as shower gels and lotions in the bathroom and an impressive coffee machine in the kitchen. Sarah and her family were very welcoming, particularly as we came with two dogs. We will certainly be back for a longer stay and to explore more of the beautiful surrounding countryside. Highly recommended!

Suzanne, London

A lovely little cottage in fabulous surroundings (plenty of wild life including a small herd of deer!) and a short distance from the town centre! The Stables was the perfect getaway and just what we needed - Sarah was a great host, available for anything you needed although we had no need to call on her. The Cottage was spotless and had all the things you need for any stay! Highly recommend the Stables!

Chirag, Hertfordshire

Wonderful, very comfortable cottage...spotless, great location, walk into town...we will be back...Thank you Sarah

Theresa, East Pennard

We know Berkhamsted well as we lived here for over 10 years and have recently moved abroad. The Stables is a perfect home-from-home for us - subtle decoration, practical kitchen and living area, great location on the edge of the local Hertfordshire countryside, yet still just a short walk down to town and even closer to the station (just 30 mins into London). We will definitely be back. Thank you.

Ursula, St-Prex

Excellent location for commute into London for sight seeing. Tranquil , peaceful . Delightful interior. Host was very friendly and approachable. Local shops and Restaurants / Pubs , very good. Would definitely stay again.
