The locals love this history-steeped pub, with its local brews, tasty food, and one of the most fascinating collections of pewter in England

Find an antique settle by a roaring fire in one of three dimly lit rooms. Scan the brews: they range from Uley beer to Fleece Inn cider. This pub has its own orchard. Landlords Nigel and Tash oversee the perfect country inn, and take full advantage of its Vale of Evesham location. As part of the Great British Asparagus Festival, hundreds gather in the courtyard in June to bid for the season’s best asparagus. The food is tasty too. One Fleece favourite are the hand-raised pies, the meat supplied by a butcher in Tewkesbury. The pub, bequeathed in the 1970s to the National Trust, is surrounded by other NT properties. Must-visits are the 13th-century tithe barn in Middle Littleton, 3 miles, and Snowshill Manor in the Cotswold Hills, 9 miles. Come home to dog treats, water bowls, lovely service, and a family-friendly orchard-garden.

Local points of interest from Nigel Smith:

Local points of interest from
Nigel Smith:

  • Lola Taplin, the last private owner, who bequeathed the pub to the National Trust, is fondly remembered in the Fleece and local folklore has it that she still watches over the pub in the incarnation of an owl that sits on the ridge of the thatched barn.
  • Each Thursday evening is Folk night for locals in the Pewter room plus our Mediaeval Barn is often graced by some of the most well regarded Folk and Acoustic artists of the modern day, from Breabach to Martin Simpson.
  • Having started life as a farmhouse, the Fleece has seen its share of animal residents, including chickens, goats, cats and dogs, even a cockatoo! Our present pets are Orlando, the elderly pub cat, and Tafarn, the slightly more boisterous Welsh Terrier!
  • Look out for the witch circles, painted in front of the open fireplaces, in accordance with local tradition, to prevent witches from entering down the chimneys.
  • The Fleece Inn has three resident Morris sides! They are Pebworth Morris (Cotswold), Belle d'Vain (North West) and Asum Gras (Molly). They all make regular appearances in the courtyard of the Fleece and support us in many of our events throughout the year.
  • Bretforton village started its own Community Shop in 2014, just 5 mins stroll from the Fleece you can get local foods, fresh soups, newspapers and more, with a warm welcome from the village volunteers.
