Attractive South Downs pub in pretty Lodsworth. Family-friendly, rooms for events, flowers everywhere – and really good classic pub food

A great walk and Sunday roast destination. Amy and Henry have worked their magic with this sister pub to their Noah’s Ark in nearby Lurgashall. Step through the door to find earthy colours, scrubbed wood, a fire burning – and staff with a friendly hello. Award-winning Langham Brewery is just down road, and the bar features other ales, a gluten-free and a monthly guest one too; a short but well thought out wine list includes Sussex choices. The menu is good pub food following the seasons, using as many local ingredients as they can: pie and quiche of the day, homemade burger, risotto, home-baked ham, crab mayo with chilli and lime… You can sit outside at tables in front or in the large garden at the back – the local food shop adjoining is a bit of a boon. A great place for a special occasion; informal and muddy walkers will feel equally at home.
