Wind through the lovely Test Valley with its thatched cottages and fields to find The Crown standing like a beacon at the hub of this tiny village, emitting a homing signal to all those in need of sustenance. The elegant whitewashed exterior hides a stylish and warm-hearted interior with comfy sofa, open fire, a very well-equipped games room and a conservatory at the back. You’re in the heart of the North Wessex Downs AONB so take the dog for a yomp then back for a hearty ale  and a tasty treat from the kitchen. Owner Chef Dave cooks up 'rustic neat' dishes tuned to the seasons and locally sourced. Tuck into seared scallops with pumpkin, almond, hazelnut and wild rice granola with salse verde then foraged wild mushroom risotto with truffle, herb cream and aged parmesan. Puddings are tempting too. A gem.
