A classic Cotswolds inn that’s open all day, super-smart and delightfully friendly, with a plush bar and restaurant, and super pub menus

Charles II once stayed at this pretty coaching inn, posing as a manservant, so the story goes. Now it's had a refurb in classic English style, and bar, lounge and restaurant glow. Open all day, the Fleece has quite a buzz. Drop by for a wake-up coffee and eggs on toast; choose a tasty platter at lunchtime and a pint of Thwaites. There are daily specials and Sunday roasts; our smoked chicken sandwich was delicious. You can indulge in some truly wicked puddings and fine local cheeses, perhaps with a glass of port. As for the staff, they're charming, well-trained, and cheerful. The golden Cotswolds await: hike with the dog, browse the antique shops and the chic little delis, then return for a meal with a proper pint or a glass from their well-chosen wine list. The super Fleece is a crowd-pleaser from start to finish.

"Right at the heart of Cirencester's pretty market town, the Fleece is abuzz with colour and country charm. Whether you've popped in for a coffee or a feast with the family, there's a comfortable corner where you can settle or spread out. The feature rooms are a delight, ask for Number One with its fabulous wallpaper, or opt for one of the big rooms with the super-sized bathrooms. A real treat."

"My husband and I had a very enjoyable short break at The Fleece in September and found the staff helpful, polite and friendly at all times. The breakfasts were delicious and a pleasant start to the day. We stayed in a character room which was warm and comfortable. We were not aware that as guests we had to book a table in the restaurant on the Saturday evening, therefore had to be squashed into a small table opposite the bar which I found noisy, however the food was enjoyable and plentiful. We would definitely recommend The Fleece to others when visiting this wonderful Cotswold town."
