Roses ramble above the door, food is deliciously fresh and local, and there’s a sitting room for afternoon tea. Wonderful

An idyllic village of mellow stone where little has changed in 200 years. The Rose and Crown dates from 1733 and stands on the green, next to the Saxon church. Roses ramble above the door in summer, so pick up a pint and search out the sun on the gravelled forecourt. Inside is just as good. You can sit at settles in the bar and roast away in front of the fire as you rifle through the Teesdale Mercury, or seek out sofas in the peaceful sitting room and tuck into afternoon tea. Delicious food can be eaten informally in the bar or restaurant, but you'll need a reservation at the moment. Try the local Raby Estate venison pie with braised cabbage and a red wine gravy followed by white chocolate panna cotta and pistachio ice cream. High Force waterfall and Barnard Castle are close – and you can take your wet togs to the drying room.

  • The Rose & Crown stands next to the Saxon church in Romaldkirk known locally as 'the cathedral of the dales'.
  • The old Tees railway line runs through Romaldkirk and this is now a great footpath to head either up or down the dale.
  • Romaldkirk is in the beautiful dale of Teesdale and the upper course of the river Tees is just half a mile away providing lovely riverside walks and fabulous fly fishing.
  • Upper Teesdale is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and includes a Natural Nature Reserve where you will find rare species of birds and arctic-alpine flora.
  • The moors around upper Teesdale provide some of the best grouse shooting in the world and the upper course of the river Tees is regarded as one of the best fly-fishing rivers for wild trout in the UK.
  • The nearby market town of Barnard Castle is famous for its antique shops located on 'The Bank'. It is also home to the world famous Bowes Museum which is known as 'the Versailles of the north'.

"On a cool August day we received the warmest of welcomes at this beautiful and comfortable inn. It’s several years since we had enjoyed a stay here and we were once again charmed by beautiful rooms, delicious food and great service. We are planning another trip for this year. It’s an oasis of calm in a troubled world!"

"Have stayed at the R&C many times. All of the rooms are furnished and decorated to a high standard. The housekeeping is excellent. All of the staff are kind, friendly and helpfull. The food served in both bar and restaurant is of faultless quality, good choices on bar and restaurant menus. The comfortable bar, overlooking the village green is a very relaxing place in which to enjoy good food and a drink. More formal dining in the oak panelled dining room is candle lit and romantic. Very dog friendly, lots of good walks locally."
