Rose & Crown - Pub in Durham
Romaldkirk, Barnard Castle, DL12 9EB, Durham
England,
United Kingdom
An idyllic village of mellow stone where little has changed in 200 years. The Rose and Crown dates from 1733 and stands on the green, next to the Saxon church. Roses ramble above the door in summer, so pick up a pint and search out the sun on the gravelled forecourt. Inside is just as good. You can sit at settles in the bar and roast away in front of the fire as you rifle through the Teesdale Mercury, or seek out sofas in the peaceful sitting room and tuck into afternoon tea. Delicious food can be eaten informally in the bar or restaurant, but you'll need a reservation at the moment. Try the local Raby Estate venison pie with braised cabbage and a red wine gravy followed by white chocolate panna cotta and pistachio ice cream. High Force waterfall and Barnard Castle are close – and you can take your wet togs to the drying room.
