Light-flooded former schoolhouse with a glorious oak bar offering an impressive selection of gins and super food

Read guest comments

The sandblasted brick walls of this famously dog-friendly old school house rise to raftered, vaulted ceilings and large windows pull natural light into every corner. Cartoons and photos nestle amongst old sporting paraphernalia, and oriental rugs sprawl beneath tables, pews and chairs. The glorious carved oak bar dominates the main hall, offering the malted charms of Cholmondeley Best Bitter and other local ales as well as a staggering 366 varieties of ruinously good gin (the charming staff will help you choose); they're the UK’s Best Gin Pub for 2020. Study the blackboard menus or opt for sharing a seafood trawler board followed by their legendary steak and kidney pie. There's an annual Gin Fest, and Juniper Berry Music Festival in July. Weddings can be held in the grounds. Seldom has going back to school been this much fun.

"Stayed one night on way up to Cumbria. Lovely welcoming pub with a gorgeous bar The food and friendly service very good . Our room was lovely too but the bed could have been better. We will go back there another time for sure."

"Staggering in through pouring rain we were warmly greeted and immediately invited to sit by the fire with a cup of tea. After settling into our comfortable bedroom we went back to the bar and restaurant area, had an excellent meal that included slow roast belly of pork, fish pie and Cholmondley Eton Mess and slept soundly after a tiring journey. The following morning we had an equally good breakfast and a long and interesting chat with the owner, who happened to be sitting next to us eating his own breakfast. This seemed to sum up the laid back atmosphere of such an interesting setting."
