Absolute gem of a pub, saved and run by the village. Wonderful walks, views, tasty grub and a warm welcome - a Sawday's Community Champion

Pubs like this don't come along often, certainly not often enough for our taste. Beautiful on the outside, even better inside, with a pretty garden perched at the back, looking out across Bath's rolling countryside. 1674 is carved into the stone arch over the door, although parts may date back further, and the team spent lavishly to make sure it looks as if nothing's changed in the years between then and now. Wooden shutters, cavernous fireplaces, wonky tables and chairs; you'll start wishing for a lock-in as soon as you set foot here. One side of the bar is reserved for drinkers only, while those with an appetite can choose to eat downstairs or up. Expect hearty fare with a creative flair (confit spiced duck leg with asian fregola; roast Cornish hake with tempura squid) while Sunday lunches are the stuff of legend. Our favourite new find by a long mile.

This place is one of our Sawday’s Community Champions – not-for-profit organisations receiving subsidised Sawday’s membership as recognition for their support of causes and communities.

  • The Packhorse is a 17th century inn which reopened in 2018 having been saved in what is currently the most successful community pub buy out in Britain. It's since been awarded CAMRA's best saved pub award.
  • The pub is a true gem having been sensitively restored throughout and furnished with original tavern furniture. The garden enjoys tremendous views of the hills beyond.
  • It is situated in the beautiful village of South Stoke just 3 miles from central Bath on the southern most slopes of the Cotswolds.
  • There are several great circular walks to be enjoyed from the pub, printed guides are available at the bar.

"Beautiful interiors and a gorgeous sunny garden at this village pub. We had Sunday lunch outside on the lawn which was lovely, and will definitely be back when passing again."

"Imagine getting a little lost on the back road into Bath, and winding up here. The huge 17th century door leads into a perfectly un-pretentious pub, gloomy with shutters and set with proper old ale tables. Escape into the sunny garden or idle by the bar with the very happy locals. You simply won't want to leave. "
