Surrounded by the wonderful moors, an enchanting inn with pretty interiors and heaven on a plate. Castle Howard and Whitby are close

Victor swapped the City for the North Yorkshire Moors and this old coaching inn; the place oozes comfort and style. Duck in through the front door to a tiny, cosy, panelled tap room serving real Yorkshire ales, with smart country furniture, fine wines and eager young staff. In the dining room, find heaven on a plate as you dig into a supper of seared scallops (hand-dived from their own Scottish seabed) with air-dried ham, followed by Levisham mutton with Irish cabbage, then poached rhubarb on toasted brioche with homemade ice cream. Menus change monthly and 80% of the ingredients are locally sourced, with meat from Glaves Butchers and super fresh watercress from Pickering. Don't miss the beamed club room for a roaring fire, board games and an honesty bar. Castle Howard is nearby, the moors are wild, the steam railway is fun.

"Really lovely boutique accommodation. Great mirror in the bedroom for getting ready ladies! Excellent food - a lovely dinner in the garden. Wished we could have stayed longer."
June 2014
"Our stay was a truly sumptuous affair, in one of the Hideaway Rooms in a converted stable block, chosen for dog-friendly reasons. These rooms feature individual design, luxury bedding, towels and furnishings, a fantastic shower and bath experience, and complimentary WiFi. They're extremely spacious and have slate floors with underfloor heating. Service is immaculate, and the food is imaginative and sourced mainly from local sources. We found not one thing to criticize, and had a wonderful and relaxing stay. Highly recommended! The place has an elegance and friendliness that is rare."
