The Black Bull – a famous old name in Yorkshire dining – has received a trademark makeover to bring it into the 21st century, the most notable addition being a smart restaurant where walls of glass open onto a terrace for lunch in good weather. Inside, there's a panelled bar with armchairs in front of a wood-burner where you can sink a pint of Black Sheep (brewed down the road). Then there's the excellent food. Menus are extensive, a smörgåsbord of fresh, local produce, with fish and chips and a good burger sitting alongside baby Dover sole meunière and charcoaled steaks. The pudding menu will please the toughest critic, with delicious local cheeses to tickle the palate. You'll find chateaubriand too, and an excellent wine list to help wash it all down. Smart bedrooms are on the way and there's even the odd Murder Mystery evening.
