Warm watchful service and award-winning seasonal food are among the treats in store at this elegant townhouse hotel in the old heart of York

Read guest comments

In the centre of York is a handsome Georgian townhouse with a strikingly luxurious interior which has just had a smart makeover. In the cellar: vaulted rooms, cool tunes, stone floors and charmingly mismatched furniture. Upstairs: a pair of dining rooms, grand, elegant and eye-catching. Vintage panelling, tall sash windows, semi-circular sofas, illuminated sculptures. All is cosy but classy, and the service is informal but attentive. The award-winning food is impressive too, and packed with flavour so tuck into the likes of Thwaites ale and mushroom pie, a smoked aubergine seitan burger or a warming helping of moules frites, freshly landed and cooked in the flavour of the day. Leave room for caramelised rice pudding with aromatic poached fruits. The wines are wide-ranging and the beers are Thwaites.

  • We have two of the largest sun terraces inside the city wall - perfect for enjoying a refreshing drink on a sunny day.
  • We are just around the corner from York Cathedral - in fact you sneak a peek of the top of the Cathedral from our rear sun terrace.
  • Our name comes from the time between 1806 and 1976 when the building was used as a residence for judges when they were attending the quarterly sessions at the Assize Courts at York Castle.
  • The Shambles is believed to be the oldest shopping street in Europe, even getting a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086 .
  • York has more miles of intact city walls than anywhere else in England - great for exploring the city!
  • The International Ghost Research Foundation announced in 2002 that York is officially the most haunted city in Europe - we even have a few ghosts of out own!

"Judges Lodgings, York really did deliver! We received a very warm welcome from the kind well informed receptionist. The room was great, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean with an impressive view of the Minster. It's very well placed for exploring all that wonderful York has to offer! The whole place is great including the very tasty food and can't be faulted in any way, but the staff are what make this place stand out! Don't hesitate, you will have a great stay!"
