Whitewashed walls echo the chalk horse that gave its name to this very handsome village inn. Inside all is as neat as a new pin. Lovingly polished parquet glows beneath scrubbed wooden tables, while padded bar stools and assorted chairs – some antique and carved – are well spaced around the reclaimed oak bar. Having been a grocer's shop, a bakery and an inn during its long life the pub now focuses on what it does best: providing great food and drink to villagers and visitors. Eat by the sturdy wood-burner in the bar or in the elegant terracotta dining area with its beams and mullioned windows. Lunches are relaxed affairs of sandwiches and pub classics. Dinner lists pork and game from the pub's own farm in season, and children are well looked after.

"We were driving to our destination and The White Horse Inn happened to be on the way. We stopped for lunch, we were greeted by the friendly staff when we got in. The waitress who served us was very accommodating of our dietary restrictions (one vegan and one vegetarian) and recommended us plates in the menu. The food was delicious!! The PUB has a strong feeling of "locals meet locals"."

"We made our way to Compton Bassett for early supper as we have a 10 month old baby. We were welcomed in to the pub, and given the choice of eating in the bar, restaurant or garden - there were no restrictions as a result of the baby. We opted for the bar but ate off the a la carte menu, all of which tasted delicious with locally sourced meat, and was presented beautifully. Locals came & went from the bar, giving it a lovely atmosphere, and waiting staff gave us plenty of time to enjoy our meal. When our baby unexpectedly woke, providing a high chair was no problem. Would definitely recommend!"

"We stayed for one night . Lovely welcome ,friendly staff. The pub feels warm and cosy good selection of beers and wine list. Rooms were excellent ,quite simple but very comfortable and many with patios to sit and look at sheep! Very comfortable bed and gorgeous toiletries. Dinner was great ,modern food and superbly cooked. We will return."
