Find this 16th-century pub next to the churchyard, village shop and some wonky old cottages in a small village on the outskirts of Salisbury. Choose a book and settle in the bay window next to a roaring fire or have a drink in the garden while you gaze at fields and horses. The bar menu features pub classics, and the superb main restaurant, Betony, has two AA Rosettes and Michelin-star quality fare – best showcased by the six-course surprise tasting menu. For lunch, try chicken liver parfait followed by hot smoked salmon, linguine, spinach and pine nuts, or home-baked Wiltshire venison and chorizo cassoulet. Leave room for lemon posset with home-made shortbread. Romsey and the cathedral city of Salisbury are eight miles away, and Stonehenge is half an hour's drive. You're near the New Forest too.

Guest feedback
"This was quite a surprise - in the heart of this village it was an absolute gem. Adam's attention to detail is outstanding. It was very hard to fault anything - in fact I couldn't. It would be a marvellous place for a weekend break or a real treat for a celebratory meal. l loved it."
