A comfortable and welcoming gastropub whose dining room is always full, thanks to a kitchen headed by top chef Alex Venables

The beef wellington says it all: prime fillet of beef, topped with mushroom duxelle and liver parfait  cooked in pastry, laid on a bed of allotment greens and dauphinoise potatoes, and finished with a red wine sauce. The old boozer in the hamlet of Woolly Green has been gutted and transformed by Alex Venables, chef with a pedigree, and Alison, dynamic front of house. Enter to find comfy leather chesterfields and a long panelled bar, open fires, scrubbed pine tables, smart tartan touches, and an antlered head on a tasteful grey wall. The ales are local, the wines are global and eclectic, and you can watch the chefs create marvels from the open-to-view kitchen: fish hotpot; osso buco; belly of pork; ravioli filled with mushrooms and cream cheese, served on wilted spinach and finished with truffle oil. The beer garden is a suntrap in summer.
