A welcoming inn (with five pretty bedrooms) in a chocolate-box village. Just an hour on the train, and a short hop in a taxi, from London

Retreat from life as usual for a couple of days and feel completely cosseted here by the lovely team and superb cooking. The create kitchen team do good things with fish, pheasant and venison - all local produce. The menu is varied so tuck into pub classics or something more elaborate depending on your mood. Pull on your boots and head out for a stomp - there are great walks from the door: join the Wayfarers Walk or the Test Way; The Kennet & Avon Canal (hop on in nearby Hungerford); and the Wessex Ridgeway, which takes you past the mystical Avebury Stones.. Once you've blown the cobwebs away settle down in front of the roaring wood-burner; on fine days sip your G&T on the terrace at the back. Bring a party and eat in the bright dining room. Dogs are welcomed with open arms too.

Guest feedback
"We chose to visit the crown and anchor after seeing them in the sawdays awards and had such a wonderful time! The staff were knowledgeable, relaxed and friendly, the village is gorgeous (quintessential thatched cottages everywhere) and we had the best roast pork we have ever eaten sat in the sun outside. We would highly recommend visiting - and make sure you eat! "
