If things Shakespearian inspire you, then the timbered high street's 17th-century Bell will not disappoint. There is a richness about the natural oak beams and settles, the stone floors strewn with Persian rugs, the dog-grates cradling glowing embers. This is a historic village inn that serves top-quality, locally sourced food, be it simple pub favourites such as pork loin with sausage and bean cassoulet or a more Gallic beef bourguignon served with mash. Don't miss the Indian-inspired Fridays, or the excellent wine list. If you're into food provenance, every supplier is listed on the back of the menu and they are almost all small independents. Staff are happy, attentive and long-serving. Cask ales, kids' portions – a wonderful traditional English pub.
