Up the narrow lane to this dreamy pub, for fresh flowers, wonky beams and the perfect hot beef sandwich. Dogs and everyone are welcome

After a visit to Petworth House, head here, on the park's western edge. Up the tiny lane, views sweep towards the South Downs. Enjoy the garden from deck chairs, hammocks and straw-bale seats or have lunch at shaded tables on benches covered with sheepskins. Inside: a series of rambling and intimate rooms furnished with quirky pieces, fresh flowers, painted panelling and four log fires – one in an old back range. Sam and Misa love this pub and their passion is reflected in the homemade treats on sale by the door and chalkboards championing producers (the latest a goat farmer with a dairy). Beautiful dishes include summer soup of local berries with mint and creme fraiche, gazpacho of heritage tomatoes, potted rabbit, a rich fish pie. Our hot beef sandwich with homemade horseradish sauce, was delicious. A very happy place in a sleepy Sussex village.

"An unscheduled and very brief visit but a very warm welcome to this delightful inn in the heart of the Sussex countryside and next to the splendid Petworth deer park. Come and sample the menu and enjoy the imaginatively decorated dining rooms. It is obvious to the visitor that the owners care a lot about their pub, their food and their rooms which are all up to a very high standard. "

"I stayed for 2 nights with my fiancée in this fantastic pub. The room was comfy and the whole pub itself was so welcoming and cosy, with fires in every room, and despite being quite a small building you could always find a quiet corner. The staff were all so friendly and you could see they were really proud of the place. The food is a must, everything (within reason) is locally sourced and is really excellent, if you're staying over the breakfast is also really lovely. I can't recommend this spot highly enough and we will be back. "

"A perfect location for a memorable weekend - or longer - getaway from it all. Mine hosts - Misha and Sam - were totally on their respective game, and the six nights we stayed at the Inn for my nephew's wedding in nearby Storrington were darling. In addition to the sumptuous breakfasts, we dined in the venue several times, and couldn’t have done better at a four-star restaurant in London. The locally-sourced produce in outstanding. We will return soon!"

"Stayed here 2nights and the only fault-which is not really one- is that it's quite difficult to park the car. The inn is off a main road, up a narrowish lane, with no carpark- being too old!! opposite is a church with an unusual tower- the bells do NOT ring all through the night. The owners are a great young couple with a good business- lots of meals being served the 2 nights we stayed. Our room was good, all one could want, as was the bathroom; no noise from the bar below. Interesting garden with seating and quirky signs. Food was excellent- not cheap but then- locally sourced and the area is obviously quite well-heeled. Well-placed for Chichester/Petworth Nat. trust/Arundel Castle etc. Look forward to staying again-and we are quite picky. What more can one say."
