Sussex rarebit on artisan bread, fruit crumble and custard, lovely British beers, cordials and wines... walk it all off on the South Downs!

Tucked away in the South Downs is a very English cosy pub. It's not just the Cath Kidston country kitchen bar and the Saint George references that wave the British flag; behind the bar are artisan beers, stouts, meads, cordials, and British and Commonwealth wines. Well-kept beers such as Goodwood Organic Sussex Ale make a fine accompaniment to the locally sourced dishes: Sussex rarebit on artisan bread; pork chops with butternut squash mash, leeks and apple and ale gravy; seasonal fruit crumbles. In summer there's a pretty garden for barbecues and James's annual beer festival. What's more, you're so near the glorious South Downs (they know all the routes) that there's every excuse for a spot of Sussex cheese board indulgence before striding uphill.

James Anthony Thompson:

  • St Margaret's Church A pretty little Norman Church, that has two figures carved of a hare and a bearded man. Other parts of the church also date back to the 12th century
  • Eartham Woods are one of the best places to see bluebells in the spring, although there are many people who believe Eartham Woods to be a sinister place which can play tricks with the mind!
  • Stane Street at Eartham is one of the best places from which to enjoy a walk along the great Roman road of Stane Street - which linked Roman Chichester and London. The run of the road here is fairly uninterrupted from Eartham Woods all the way to
  • Goodwood, Fontwell Park, Arundel Castle & Cathedral, Chichester Cathedral, Midhurst ruins, Cowdray Polo, Petworth House,
  • Denmans Gardens, Aldingbourne Country Centre, Wetlands Centre Arundel, Tangmere Aviation Museum, South Downs National Park, National Trust Slindon
