You'll find fabulous food and beautiful rooms at this cool little country inn close to Newmarket, Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds

The rise of the cool country inn continues apace and the most recent member to join the club is the Packhorse, a beautifully renovated pub that was rescued from abject neglect. These days it's a small-scale pleasure dome – striking interiors and ambrosial food that elate – yet it remains a village local with a lovely bar that welcomes all. The bar and dining room are open plan with a fire that burns on two sides and the odd armchair to take the strain. You'll find varnished floorboards, beautiful art, low-hanging lamps at the cool little bar. Irresistible food waits, maybe truffled goats cheese with quince and figs, Suffolk venison and kidney pudding, plum tarte tatin with fruit-cake ice cream. There's a terrace for good weather and a private dining room turns into a very cool meeting room.
