Thorpeness is a one-off, the turn-of-the-century brainchild of G S Ogilvie, who set out to create a holiday resort free of piers and promenades and entirely safe for children. The Dolphin, in the middle of the village, is a great little inn. There are two lively bars, open fires and wooden floors in the dining room and, outside, a terrace and lawn for barbecues and al fresco dinners. No-nonsense food hits the spot, perhaps grilled sardines with basil pesto, chargrilled steak with chunky chips, a plate of local cheeses. Stay a while – you're spoiled for things to do: a great golf course, an unspoilt sand and pebble beach, and a 64-acre lake, the Meare, which is never more than three-feet deep and was inspired by the creator of Peter Pan; children can row, canoe up creeks and discover islands.
