Deep in the Suffolk countryside, a peaceful and very pretty pub with history, heritage and hearty fare. Dogs and families welcome

Set deep in the Suffolk countryside, the L-shaped Crown has been at the heart of the village for centuries. Now the team behind the One Bull in Bury St Edmunds is working its magic to bring craft beers, local wines and good food to this gem of a pub. Eat in the oak panelled dining room where leaded windows bring in the light, or under the beams at a big table close to the roaring fire. On sunny days, you'll want to spill into the wonderful garden. Start with home-baked bread, end with homemade ice-cream, and indulge in superior glazed Suffolk ham with free-range egg and chips, or sea bream served with aubergine purée. Little ones have their own menu, and a deep toy chest to explore. A footpath brings you straight from the fields into the big garden at the back, so walk up an appetite and do bring the dog — all are welcome here.

  • The Crown is a beautiful old pub formerly known as Hartest Hall - the earliest mention of the hall is in the will of John Bridge (1597) when he left the hall and 3 surrounding acres to his son, William.
  • In a beam in the pub ceiling, you will find various coins and tokens. These were put there by the village men before they left for war and removed by those who returned. There are 24 remaining...
  • We have a huge pub garden with its own stream at the bottom - this is known locally as Hartest beach!
  • Located on the village green is the Hartest Stone which was placed there in 1713 to commemorate the victories of the Duke of Marlborough in the war of the Spanish Succession.
  • Hartest is 8 miles away from Bury St Edmunds and is a really pretty traditional English village.
  • Hartest is also close to Lavenham and Long Melford - if you're a Harry Potter fan, be sure to visit Lavenham where you can find the house in which the young wizard's parents were killed by Lord Voldemort.
