Classic good looks and bags of style at this friendly inn on the village green. Best local produce, big comfortable rooms

A beautiful pub at the top of the village, looking out to the grounds of Melford Hall and the impressive church. Staff are genuinely welcoming and local sourcing of Suffolk’s huge range of produce makes both simple pub food and more experimental dishes exquisite. Foodies will be in their element: local produce is the star here, from full Suffolk breakfasts, light lunches and pub classics to afternoon teas and a la carte dinners. Gin, beers and wines are often locally sourced too. Take over the conservatory if you come with a group. A five-minute walk into the village reveals a main street lined with cafes, restaurants and shops, with a definite emphasis on antiques and interiors; cult TV series Lovejoy was filmed in the area. You can bring your well-behaved dogs. Melford Hall is open most days and hosts regular Elizabethan pageants.

  • Take a tour around Melford Hall, a National Trust property dating back to the mid-16th Century, the time of the Tudors. Initially built for Sir William Cordell, a lawyer who served Henry VIII, Mary Tudor and Elizabeth I.
  • Kentwell Hall is another magnificent Tudor mansion set in tranquil gardens and perfect for a family picnic.
  • Get utterly lost in antique hunting at Clare Antiques and Interiors, housing four floors of objects and collectables.
  • The medieval village of Lavenham, situated on a ridge is a short 12-minute drive from us. This picturesque village features some of Britain’s best-preserved timber framed buildings dating back to the 15th century.
  • The childhood home to Thomas Gainsborough, one of Britain’s most important portraitists and landscape painters has been converted into a museum showcasing the largest collection of his work.
  • Clare Castle Country Park bears an abundant heritage holding the 11th century Clare Castle at its centre. The castle features a motte and bailey structure which is still standing as well as the River Stour and Ponds.
