Drawn by the Staffordshire countryside and the enticing décor, dog-walkers mix with ale-drinkers, posh locals and the lunching Barbour set

In the old village of Swynnerton on Lord Stafford’s estate is the once-forlorn Fitzherbert, all spruced up. If you’ve visited before you’re in for a surprise: bar, lounge and snug now entwine with an open-plan feel, warmed by three delicious fires. A friendly vivacious team makes the place tick as they ferry platefuls of flavoursome food to elegant tables: seafood platters, steak and stout pies, crumbles, brownies and port-poached pears. They do a great line in comfort food, have a good list of local suppliers, and Staffordshire ales star at the pumps. There are 30 ports (more than any other pub in the country!), 16 wines by the glass and a real cider, too: something to be proud of. The 1818 building once held a forge and the Anvil Room is enticing: leather wingback chairs, a forge-like fire, hops above a soft-lit wall.
