The Experience

A treat to stay at a pub with such a good food ethos, and its position on the Cotley Estate means close relationships with the farmers and producers – beef and lamb are sourced directly from the estate. They raise chickens and pigs, nurture a bountiful kitchen garden and award-winning head chef, Dan, follows the ‘nose-to-tail’ cooking principle.

You stay in one of four bedrooms in the stables, all are beautifully designed and come with coffee machines, robes and fresh milk delivered in the morning. Two are dinky, three share an outdoor terrace, and the largest has a bed on the mezzanine, a free-standing tub and a private courtyard. Breakfast, on your terrace or in the pub, is a generous continental spread. Dinner is a must.

The Waterloo train brings you to Axminster, 15 mins by taxi. Pick up the ‘Wambrook Wanderings’ guide for suggested walks from the door, Dorset is at your feet and it’s 30 mins to Lyme Regis and the coast.

Reviews

An absolute gem. A great treat staying at the Cotley Inn. Unfortunately only one night. We stayed in the suite which is on two floors. The bedroom is upstairs w the bathtub at the end. Great idea and quirky design. The service is amazing. So friendly and helpful. Like friends. Food was fantastic! Can highly recommend this place!

Location

The neighbourhood

The pub, hidden down winding country lanes a couple of miles from Chard, is a super base for walking. Green and pleasant Somerset is at your feet and waiting to be explored while the Jurassic coast is a short drive for fossil-hunting, beach days, swimming, kayaking and hiking. National Trust properties abound. Head back for a pint of something local on the sunny terrace and a slap-up meal.

Local points of interest from Ben Porter & Maddie Beaumont

  • A foodie's paradise with cooking and baking courses littered across Dorset, Somerset & Devon...learn how to forage at Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage or strip things back to basics at High Grange - East Devon's best outdoor fire school.
  • A 20-minute drive from the Jurassic Coast, explore the fossil filled coast line, kayak under the archway at Durdle Door & catch your supper on one of Lyme Bay's mackerel fishing trips.
  • Pick strawberries (May - September) on nearby Forde Abbey Estate and marvel at the former Cistercian monastery. Top tip! Pick up some local clotted cream en route and enjoy your pickings in the Abbey's generous gardens.
  • Somerset's most hip cider farm at Burrow Hill (a short car ride away) offer guided tours with tastings that take guests through the processes of harvesting and distilling the apples - it lasts approximately an hour and a half.

Introducing

Ben Porter & Maddie Beaumont

Ben and Maddie lived and worked in the Canadian Rockies before returning to the Blackdown Hills area and taking on The Cotley Inn. They have been influenced by North American hospitality and are inspired to host guests as if they were friends - both locals and visitors. They also put a big focus on good food, cooked well. You'll probably meet their friendly black lab, Jasper, when you visit.
