This pretty 17th-century thatched village inn gives a warm welcome to all. The food and drink is spot on; breezy walks start from the door

Sip a G&T in the pretty Provençal-style courtyard garden, order delicious food then cosy up by the fire for a game of scrabble. Menus change with the season and food is locally sourced with much made, cured and smoked in-house. The atmosphere is easy going but refined, with proper silverware and linens so bag a table and try Red Mullet escabeche with dandelion, apple and cider salad followed by Somerset pork fillet with buttered leeks, five spice plum sauce and a black pudding fritter. There’s always a veggie option and fish and chips or a Lord Poulett burger for traditionalists. Puddings are tempting and there’s a super cheese list – all sourced from the West Country. Walk it all off: there’s a 13th-century Grade I listed church and the famous Spreading Oak Tree in the village. The Blackdown Hills AONB and the Jurassic Coast are only half an hour’s drive.

"What a treat to trundle down the sleepy Somerset lanes to Hinton St George where the Lord Poulett shines under its fresh thatch. Inside is all sparkling glassware and cosy corners, the outside areas are wonderfully evocative, and there's a choice of firesides. Food is served by smiling staff who know they're bringing something special to tempt your tastebuds (our fresh salad was splendid). Rooms are above-pub perfect with deeply comfortable beds, lovely curtains and headboards, shortbread treats and excellent WiFi. Heaven."

"Absolutely beautiful! The pub is gorgeous. The whole place is perfectly decorated. The room was so pretty: lovely bed; bath; furniture. We really had a lovely time. Dinner was some of the best food we have ever had. Breakfast was very good too.We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and have already recommended to several relatives. Will definitely go back."
