A smart riverside inn with airy interiors that brim with character - old beams, open fires, well-kept ales

A 17th-century Cotswold inn on the banks of the Thames, so pick up a pint, drift into the garden and watch life float by. The Trout is packed with history and character, a family-friendly rural gem where children are liked and dogs can doze in the flagstoned bars. The downstairs is timber-framed, there are paintings, gilt mirrors, and logs piled high in alcoves. In the bar, Randal selects local ales and spirits while Ricardo and Jess have cast their fairy dust into every corner. You'll feast on fabulous modern food (chargrilled rainbow trout, liquorice glazed ox cheek, hazelnut nougat parfait), while little ones choose from their own menu of homemade treats. Food is as local as possible, and there are maps for walkers to keep you slim. Bliss!

Ozel Ilaz:

  • Kelmscott Manor – William Morris’ country residence, run by the Society of Antiquaries of London the house is in amazing condition. The gardens are well worth a visit.
  • Buscot Park and Gardens – a beautiful Italianate House close by, a vast collection of art and now run by the National Trust.
  • Something to celebrate? Our spacious private dining room looking out onto the garden makes a great spot for special occasions.
  • Downton Abbey – for any adoring fan of the series, Bampton - our nearest village - was used to film the scenes for the church and the streets. Many of the houses in the village will be familiar for viewers of the series.
  • Thames Path – for serious walkers and those who just want a meander before a good lunch – the path follows adjacent to the inn.
  • 1 AA Rosette, Breakfast award and 4 Stars Gold. Part of the Pub group of the year 2016 by The Good Pub Guide.

Guest feedback
"We had a fabulous stay. The staff were welcoming, friendly and all round excellent. They could not have been more helpful, ready and willing to ask the chef when we asked about the food, which was seriously delicious. I recommend the puy lentil salad, and the rainbow trout was perfect. Home-made breads, lovely rooms, and our dog was made very comfortable too. We met the owner, who was charming, and we did not realise it was him until we read about the pub after our visit. We cannot wait to go back again, and it was a wonderful experience, we cannot rave about it more."
