A fire in the inglenook, logs stacked high, Old Hooky on tap, roast partridge with haricot beans, and much-loved host-chef Martin

Cosy, friendly, foodie, and run with great panache. The 16th-century Rose & Crown, set in an idyllic Cotswolds village, holds just two rooms: the bar itself, simple and unadorned, and a (slightly) larger extension built in 1701. There's an open fire in the inglenook, a medley of kitchen tables and chairs, well-kept beers, serious wines, and Martin, star of the show. With an impressive London pedigree behind him, he is warm, witty and passionate about food. Join a happy crowd for delicious, authentic renditions of parsnip and chestnut soup, roast partridge with haricot beans, bacon and garlic; steak ale and mushroom pie, bread and butter pudding and pear and almond tart. Cosiness and low beams for winter, a sheltered garden for summer, warmth and conviviality all year round. A gem.

  • There are lovely local country walks all around so pop in for a drink and a meal en route. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the bar. Burford, the quintessential Cotswold town, is less than two miles away and perfect for a gentle stroll.
  • On the outskirts of town is the Burford Garden Company. This is a shopper's paradise with a huge range of quality merchandise.
  • The Cotswold Wildlife Park is a few minutes away by car and makes a great family outing.
