Welcoming young staff and a relaxed mood distinguish this old-new pub - and the banoffee pud with tonka bean is to die for

Close to the white chalk horse at Uffington – the walking is grand round here – is a beautiful red-brick pub on the quiet road that winds through Letcombe Regis. The new owners have kept the fine old windows and the irresistible fireplaces and have added a garden at the back, a bright, cheerful décor, and a diamond of a chef in Phil Currie. Menus change with the seasons, and whether you go for cider braised lamb shoulder, or beer battered haddock and chips with mushy peas, this is cooking of a high order. Our two-course ‘Midweek Fix’ was a steal: a cheddar and leek tart followed by new season lamb steak, both delicious. If the pub is Georgian on the outside, it’s country-trendy within. Racing scenes adorn the walls, dog biscuits beautify the bar, and you can pop in for a latte, a well-kept pint or a hedonistic meal. It’s the sort of pub we all love.

  • Letcombe Regis, 2km from the historic market town of Wantage (birthplace of King Alfred) is the perfect base for exploring the landscape, villages and history of the Vale of White Horse, as well as visiting Oxford, Cotswolds, Berkshire Downs and Newbury.
  • Letcombe Regis is a pretty Downland village within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, the village has many thatched houses and a medieval church with a Norman tower.
  • Letcombe Regis nestles in a valley below the Berkshire Downs and the ancient Ridgeway track, which runs across England, is 87 miles long and is frequently used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Nearby attractions include White Horse Hill (NT).
  • Take the footpath to Warborough Hill above the village and enjoy dramatic views over the Thames valley in Oxfordshire to the north and the rolling and unspoilt Berkshire Downs to the south with miles of little-know tracks ideal for mountain bikers.
  • Dog-walkers will love the huge views that can be accessed from the pub door. Circular walks to Letcombe Bassett encompassing the Ridgeway or the easier route, following Letcombe Brook through the Nature Reserve, are delightful throughout the year.
  • Lambourn, known as the 'Valley of the Racehorse', is a few miles away and is home to many champion racehorses who can be glimpsed training on the gallops above Letcombe or trotting through the village. Newbury is also close by for racing enthusiasts.
