This cute pub-cottage sits on Maidensgrove Common, in a remote spot high in the Chilterns, on a lane that winds past Russell's Water near Stonor House. Arrive early for the best seat in the garden and the finest view in Oxfordshire: imagine gazing on rolling hills, pint of Brakspears to hand, red kites wheeling overhead, steaks sizzling on the chargrill. Windows in the conservatory dining room also get the view – or you can head for the rambling bars where roaring hearths warm the cockles. Find low crooked ceilings, beams, nooks, burgundy carpets, cushioned settles and tables that have been collected over years – a perfect place to tuck into fresh, plump mussels and chunks of homemade bread to mop up the juices. They make their own ginger beer and there are roasts on Sundays. Then head off into the hills.

  • No music, no fruit machines, No tack of any kind. Just old world charm and unspoilt character. Outside, no traffic, no noise, just breathtaking views over the Chilterns
  • Walks: The Five Horseshoes sits at an intersection of several national trails. The Chiltern Way, The Shakespear Way, the Ridgeway, The Ikneald way and others, which makes it one of the best walking areas in the South of England
  • Great, freshly prepared food, everything made to order on the premises. "probably the best steak you will ever have"

Guest feedback
"What a lovely lunch. Starters of curried parsnip soup and game terrine, followed by fish and chips, and beef cheeks. WOW! The beef cheeks were amazing with the horseradish mash. Fabulous staff -- felt very safe with the masks and distancing. Thank you."
