The Chequers - Pub in Oxfordshire
Church Road, Churchill, OX7 6NJ, Oxfordshire
England,
United Kingdom

Eye-catching with an immaculate frontage, the Chequers stands smartly on the village lane. Prepare for a dramatic, airy and open-plan interior of low beams, scrubbed tables on walker-friendly boards, stone walls, roaring wood-burner and a dart board put to good use. Soaring blue-green rafters and a vast dresser racked with wine bottles create an impression in the dining extension, where a blackboard up high announces the food: simple, British-traditional, and well priced. There are devilled kidneys on toast, steak and oyster pie, grilled lemon sole with brown butter, bavette steak with fries. The roasts are delicious, the service is terrific, but most exceptional are the beers: six real ales (Yankee from Roosters, Budding from Stroud) and six local keg beers. There are also ten wines by the glass.
