One of our favourite new finds: a thriving community pub with great food and a fabulous beer garden with views across Otmoor nature reserve

Oxford may be only eight miles away but you'd never know it here in the heart of the Otmoor nature reserve. Beckley's villagers rode to the rescue and placed the pub into the warm care of Aimee and head chef Joe Walton who works with local suppliers to conjure up great dishes such as lamb rump with romesco sauce and smoked aubergine. The real ales, lagers and ciders are local too, and the pub prides itself on being a welcome stop for serious diners and drinkers (do sample a signature G&T). Bring the family for a big Sunday lunch or tuck into a supper of fresh fish or superbly cooked steak. On a sunny day, sit in the handsome beer garden with a golden pint of Shotover Trinity and a plate of fish and handcut village chips, enjoying the views across Otmoor. The locals love their newly-restored pub, and so will you.

  • The pub has long been used by illustrious locals, Evelyn Waugh drowned his sorrows here after getting a third at Oxford, while Lewis Carroll was inspired to create the giant chessboard in Alice Through the Looking Glass by the chequered fields of Otmoor.
  • Otmoor Nature Reserve, managed by the RSPB, is a little known gem, teeming with wildlife, many species of bird and beautiful vistas. There are even otters to be spotted by lucky walkers.
  • With historic Oxford being only 4.5 miles away, the Abingdon Arms is the perfect place to retreat to after a day of exploring the colleges and cobbled streets of the famous university city.
  • Being situated on one of the highest points near Oxford, the views from our terraced gardens are among the best in Oxfordshire with visitors being able to take in the whole of Otmoor and the surrounding villages.
  • Otmoor has long been known to host murmarations of starlings between the months of November and February - an incredible natural sight and well worth the visit to experience.
  • The Abingdon Arms is on established cycle and walking routes and we regularly host walking and cycling groups for lunch or drinks.
