Sir Charles Napier - Pub in Oxfordshire
Spriggs Alley, Chinnor, OX39 4BX, Oxfordshire
England,
United Kingdom
In an enviable position high in the Chilterns, this attractive 18th-century brick and flint building oozes understated charisma. You’ll feel beautifully cossetted here by Julie and her charming team as you loll on comfy sofas in front of huge log fires while easy-going jazz tinkles in the background and your eyes are drawn to Michael Cooper’s sculptures (you can buy them too). The kitchen turns out delicious dishes: perhaps Orkney scallops with nasturtium or roast halibut with lobster followed by Amalfi lemon parfait and burnt meringue; the wine list is extensive and carefully chosen. Outside there are gorgeous gardens, a foliage-entwined terrace and more surreal sculptures. This is a popular spot for well-heeled locals, and people travel especially from London and Oxford. Great walking and cycling abounds. Henley isn’t far ...
