Lost in the lovely countryside a few miles west of Oxford is this splendid reinvention of the country pub with a uniquely cool take on all things retro. You’ll find vintage wallpapers, vivid colours, glass cabinets filled with curios, then a pink, up-cycled sofa in the cocktail bar. Country rugs cover flagstone floors, a fire burns on both sides in the bar, an original pine bench comes with plumped-up cushions. There's quirky art and even a little neon mixed in for good measure. All is creative, and inventive. The food is a treat, perhaps spiced whole Cotswold White chicken with smoked garlic, Bibury rainbow trout and pickled cucumber, sticky toffee pudding with ice cream; there's a scotch egg and a pint at the bar, too, and a dining terrace that overlooks the kitchen garden. Afternoon tea is not to be missed – add bubbles if you’re feeling indulgent.
