Simplicity and home-brewed beer, local lobster and Swallows kippers - no wonder you need to book first. For families, dogs, everyone...

Film nights, folk nights, beer that's brewed ten paces from the front door, lovely staff, tasty food, and a beautiful position on the Northumbrian coast. The Ship is tiny, two wonderfully authentic rooms with stripped floors, stone walls, old settles and a wood-burner for winter. There are maps, the odd nautical touch, but mostly the happy chatter of hungry souls digging into a good lunch, perhaps a hand-picked crab sandwich or a bowl of homemade soup. Christine came north with no intention of running a pub, but as befalls most who visit, she fell under its spell; now it's a place of pilgrimage for many. The food is simple, scrumptious and as local as possible: crabs and kippers from Seahouses, free-range organic meat from the Borders. In summer, life spills onto the cobbles outside. Blissful.

Local points of interest from
Christine Forsyth:

  • The Old Dairy, (opposite Ford Castle), Ford, Northumberland, Country Concept Store, coffee shop & champagne bar! Much of the stock is re-found and reclaimed. And it ranges from the very large to the very small. Also a truly beautiful place to visit!
  • Barter Books, a large antiquarian & second hand bookshop in a converted railway station, Alnwick. The shop has many extra features: open fires in the Winter, beloved by all. The Station Buffet with good plain food, coffee, tea and cookies!
  • Howick Hall tearoom & gardens. The gardens at Howick are best known for their spring bulbs & the woodland garden; there are also summer borders, a bog garden, a rockery specialising in summer plants & new woodland walks through the arboretum.
  • Dramatic views, sandy beaches & iconic castles - this is the essence of Northumberland's coast. Our coast is recognised by experts as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
  • Stand on the beach on a moonlight night & hear the seals calling from the rocks, watch the path of the moon on the sea & see the fingers of Dunstanburgh castle stand black against the sky or to watch the sun rise over the sea on a glorious summer morning
  • Warkworth Castle, Dunstanburgh Castle, Farne Islands, Holy Island, Alnwick Castle, Cragside House, Wallington Hall, the list goes on & on, plus everywhere in between is truly beautiful & special, well worth the trip!
