Pop in after a long country walk, warm weary toes (and paws) by the open fire and tuck into a delicious roast featuring Kim’s lambs

It’s a family affair here at The Plough; farmer owners Kim and Stephen keep sheep nearby and sell vintage furniture in the barn next door, leaving the bar in the capable hands of Uncle Barry. A seasoned, old-fashioned landlord and CAMRA-award winner, he welcomes both locals and strangers like old friends. Inside, character oozes: find a cosy log burner and open fire, exposed stone walls, quarry tiles and high wooden chairs at the bar. Ales change often but Doom Bar and Proper Job are regulars. The menus are short and locally-sourced: lunch on tart Provençal, dine on Everdon beef Bourguignon with dauphinoise potatoes, indulge in a treacle tart if you’ve room. The garden is a delight, with views for miles across the Northamptonshire countryside, and there’s even a play area for little ones. Bring the dog, too; all are warmly welcomed here.

Dog treats:

Water bowls inside and out. Solid floors throughout the pub so we are never fazed by muddy paws.
