Splendid seaward views at this lively pub, close to Cromer, with a shipshape dining room, fresh fish dishes, and bracing walks all around

Bypass the front entrance which takes you into the down-at-heel old boozer of a bar (due for a face lift), and head around to the back where the views dazzle. The Ship is a red brick and Norfolk flint affair facing the North Sea, and offering pub classics to hungry beachcombers. Local folklore has it that when the sea is high and a gale's blowing, you can hear the bells from lost churches, tolling beneath the waves. On calm days, you're more likely to hear the happy sounds of families playing on the flat sandy beach, working up an appetite for the hearty fare: haddock chowder, Cromer crab, the best scampi and chips, big Sunday roasts. Little Sailors can tuck into their own menu with 'treasure trove' puddings. Pop in the car for a spin to Cromer with its pier and seaside charm. Back to the Ship for those splendid views and a pint of local ale. Nautical but nice!
