Lovely village inn on the North Norfolk coast, wonderful walking, terrific tapas and pizzas

Cheerful Chequers, beloved by locals and visitors alike, is thriving under the new care of Agellus. General Manager Ewen takes the helm and all is smooth sailing - with some of the best seafood you'll find in this lovely part of the world. Thornham is a pretty little village nestled along the coast, close to spectacular scenery and nature reserves, where Chequers gleams with its whitewashed walls and red pantiles. Inside, the fireplace glows and crackles, fresh flowers sit on scrubbed tables and the menu beckons. Our tempura of Brancaster mussels with tartar espuma and chilli vinegar (part of their Norfolk tapas range) was bursting with delicate flavours, but you might try slow-cooked crispy belly of pork with cider potato fondant, black cabbage, black pudding bonbon and grain mustard velouté. Pizzas are a treat too (crispy duck caught our eye) and there's private dining in the all-weather pavilions outside. Both Sandringham and Holkham Hall are close.

  • RSPB Titchwell - very popular bird reserve where countless seabirds, marsh harriers, avocets make their home.
  • Coal Barn and Thornham harbour - Coal Barn, featured in Dickens' Great Expectations, sits in a unique position alone on the water’s edge at Thornham harbour next to the marshes and creeks. It was mainly used by smugglers in 18th century.
  • Sandringham Royal Estate - the Queen’s own country estate. For much of the year, it is possible to explore the house, museum & gardens with its pretty lake and flowerbeds. You can visit the woodland and heathland of the country park free of charge.
  • Norfolk Lavender - contains world famous lavender gardens as well as an oil distillery, Hornbeam Maze and for children, a petting barn.
  • Holkham Hall is one of the magnificent houses in England, with wonderful paintings and furnishings to be seen.
  • Beaches - visit the beautiful, charming coastal villages and towns that pepper the coast, from Hunstanton in the east to Cromer in the west, stopping off at Brancaster, Wells-next-the-Sea and Sheringham.
