Wonderfully restored and thriving old pub with twice-daily changes to the varied menu - a lovely laid-back haven for foodies

London chefs quitting fabulous establishments to transform country boozers may be two a penny, but few have managed it with the aplomb of James Rix. In the comfy laid-back bar: a log fire, the daily papers, local ales on tap and a menu that changes twice daily. Things step up a gear in the smart country-house-on-a-shoestring dining room with its cosy log-burner, that throws together polished old tables and crystal chandelier: a funky backdrop to black pudding from Normandy, wild mushrooms with a fried duck egg, or squid and chermoula, followed by whole grilled back bream, peperonata, monk beard and salsa verde. Puddings include salted caramel ice cream and biscotti. Even the focaccia is homemade. A recent refurb added a Josper charcoal oven, to the delight of diners. It is a treat to see an old pub in the right hands, and booking is recommended.
