Local diners can’t get enough of this gem, whose French chef serves delicious meals with a wonderfully wide choice of ales and wines

Tucked away at a remote crossroads in the exotically named Hogpits Bottom ('hog' being local dialect for shale) is a pretty, ivy-strewn 18th-century building with low beams, blazing fires and timbered walls. Once a row of cottages and shops, and an ale house since 1832, this listed building is now rammed with diners daily and Alvin's staff are run off their feet. French chef Claude Pallait turns out local rare breed fillets of pork with apple compote and cider jus; Little Missenden lamb with a pea flan; home-smoked fish; good old steak and kidney pie. All are delicious and are prepared from locally sourced or organic ingredients where possible. There's an excellent range of ales, and over 140 wines, ports and armagnacs. While away summer days in the garden, or watch the world go by from the benches out front.
