More chic than shabby, full of bonhomie - a beautifully revived medieval inn, with a short seasonal menu that delights

The determination to restore this old inn's charms has been a joyous success. Push open the heavy oak door to reveal a beautiful main bar: rugs on pale-painted floors, candles at mullioned windows, rough stone walls, and a log fire crackling in a 15th-century inglenook. Jugs of fresh flowers, battered leather armchairs and grand gilt-framed paintings enhance the authentic feel. Check out the papers over a pint of Butty Bach, play drafts, order from the short seasonal menu: perhaps slow roast pork belly with creamed potatoes, savoy cabbage, red wine jus and prunes, followed by honey and almond panna cotta. In summer, spill onto the peaceful terrace for a platter of seafood. Winchcombe is on the Cotswold Way; Chipping Campden is a short drive.

"Excellent hospitality, our room was very pleasant and comfortable. We arrived late after a very long car journey, the staff were very welcoming and they were very keen to attend to our every need. The travel cot we requested was brand new which was a nice touch and showed that they genuinely do go the extra mile. Breakfast was excellent. We will certainly be back. Thank you."
