Classic dishes, bar games, a big old fireplace, and menus chalked up daily. A lovely Cotswolds base.

Next to the main road in Didmarton, close to Tetbury and the Badminton Estate, is this recently refurbished inn – a perfect place in the Cotswolds. Expect beams and stone-flagged floors, inviting dark green walls adorned with antlers, fat candles on dining tables, lovely painted settles, and photos showcasing local history. There's a big old fireplace for winter, darts and dominoes in the bar, a lovely walled garden with a wood-fired pizza oven that's doing brisk business. Blackboard menus on the walls are chalked up daily. Pop in for a deli pizza with cured and spiced meats, the King's burger with cheese and chorizo, or sautéed mixed nut and herb polenta with cherry tomatoes and basil – you won't go home disappointed. Wash down with a fine wine or a local tipple – Bath Gem, Uley Bitter, perhaps one of their guest beers.

"We had a lovely lunch at The King's Arms - chosen because of its proximity to Westonbirt. Stunning decor, a really lovely menu - you can always trust a pub menu with treacle tart on it! - and very accommodating staff (we had two noisy children with us who were making quite a mess). And because there were queues to get into Westonbirt we set off on foot afterwards and strolled around the Badminton Estate, which was beautiful and just a few minutes walk down the road. "

"We just spent a wonderful night at the Kings Arms. The place is tastefully decorated, warm quirky and homely. Nothing is too much for the friendly staff. The food is nothing less than excellent and in every respect the running of the place is spot on . Not to mention beautifully comfortable beds and bed linen. We throughly recommend this place, apart from the beauty of the surrounding area , you won't need to go anywhere else !"
