Smart country inn in Constable country with lovely rooms, a sun trapping garden and superb food. Walks along the Stour are a must

You couldn't hope to wash up in a better spot, an idyllic village in Constable country with this lovely inn at its centre. Inside, you find an easy elegance: a panelled lounge comes with sofas, armchairs and open fires - a good spot for afternoon tea; the bar, made from a slab of local elm, is usually propped up by locals. You eat in the beamed dining room on food that has excellent provenance. Perhaps pickled sardines with rhubarb and soda bread followed by skate wing and Jerusalem artichokes. There are excellent steaks, moreish bar snacks; the cheeses are local and children can have small portions of whatever they fancy. If you come as a group the 'feast' menu has an exciting and inventive choice of sharing plates. Hire boats, grab a picnic from the inn, float down the sleepy Stour, then tie up on the bank for lunch al fresco.

"This pub with rooms excels on the food front with a seasonal, locally sourced menu that changes every six weeks; from my oysters to my steak I was delighted with my meal and I was looked after very well by the young team running the place. Easy to park, easy to sleep and easy to walk the dog!"

"I stayed at the Sun Inn at the beginning of a three week trip around England and I must say, I could not have picked a better place if I'd tried! When I woke up with a splitting head ache the first morning, a perfect breakfast and quiet, yet so friendly service literally saved my day. I returned for dinner at the end of my journey and had the same warm welcome again - even though the place was very busy. Didn't get to meet the ghost which was I pity so I guess I'll have to return until I do ;o) . All in all, great room, food, service and atmosphere... I will recommend it to anyone!"

"I have just come back from staying at the Sun Inn at Dedham, Essex, recommended by you. As always with a Sawday place, it was fabulous - in this instance even more fabulous that I could have imagined. Gorgeously decorated and furnished bedroom, the Dovecot and wonderful dinner and breakfast. The staff were lovely too (even when I accidentally left with my room key and couldn’t return it for some hours)."

"A lovely old inn which doesn't pretend its something its not. Staff friendly, food delicious, atmosphere relaxed. We got a good deal for one night which included breakfast, an afternoon tea or a blackboard lunch, A la carte dinner and even bike hire if we wanted. A charming village with a few quirky shops which made a nice change to the high street chains. The bed was very comfortable and the room spacious, all in all a lovely stay."
