A great little pub for lovers of game and all things seasonal; every dish is lovingly prepared and they’re a Camra winner too

What's not to love? A country pub with wines by the glass and ales from the cask, modern British cooking that's delicious and well-priced, and a landlord who's knowledgeable and welcoming. This popular pub is owner-run and it shows. What's more, it's in a beautiful spot, overlooking the Essex Way. Walkers with dogs beat a path to its door, and so do lucky locals. Inside are black beams and log burners, crisp napkins on old wooden tables, a bookcase of antique tomes, and snugs with dark green walls. Our pigeon with black pudding served on a bed of red cabbage, washed down with a pint (you might try Crouch Vale or Mighty Oak) was full of flavour; the kitchen is known for its quality meats and locally sourced game, with some of the vegetables supplied by the villagers. All the pub classics are prepared from scratch too.
