The Hoop - Pub in Essex
High Street, Stock, CM4 9BD, Essex
England,
United Kingdom
History and heritage run deep at The Hoop; built in 1640 with timbers from the warships at Tilbury Docks, it’s been a stalwart in the pretty village of Stock ever since. Inside, there’s a huge fireplace, rustic wooden tables, wicker chairs. Enjoy wine from local New Hall Vineyard or a pint of Adnams before tucking into a pub classic in the bar area downstairs (we loved our ‘toad in the Hoop’ and mash). For a smarter experience, head up to The Oak Room, the light, bright, beautifully vaulted dining space. Phil’s excellent, seasonal menus make the most of local produce: start with panko-crusted goat’s cheese bonbons, follow with roast Goosnargh duck with pumpkin and burnt orange purée, then finish with chocolate fondant and salted caramel ice cream. If you’re feeling particularly decadent, end the night with some of Phil’s handmade chocolate truffles.
