The Red Lion - Pub in Dorset
Hope Square, Weymouth, DT4 8TR, Dorset
England,
United Kingdom
Just a buoy's throw away from Weymouth's off-shore lifeboat, this little pub has fed and watered lifeboat crews for nearly 150 years. Behind the central bar, locals and visiting seafarers quaff pints of Otter Bitter Lifeboat Ale whilst sharing plates of fresh seafood, surrounded by nautical ropes and Morse Code flags. In winter, cosy corners panelled with old rum barrels are a great place for warming dishes such as steak and ale pie served with minted 'not so mushy peas', and warm sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. Outside in summer, wooden tables with lanterns are perfect for al fresco eating in the square. Rain or shine, the bar with its collection of lifeboat memorabilia is still a focal point. Even if you can't decipher the flags you can toast the crews, with a tot of one of the pub's 80 rums.
