A super old place for those who love history and Thomas Hardy. Come for pints by the fire, enjoyable gastropub food and great walking

Perfect Evershot and rolling countryside lie at the door of this 400-year-old gem in Thomas Hardy country. Natalie and Richard took the reins to revive its fortunes, with head chef Robert Ndungu in the kitchen. It's very much a traditional inn; locals sup pints of Otter Ale in the long flagstoned bar and menus are sourced from within 25 miles. In the dining room, the atmosphere changes to rural country house with smartly laid tables, terracotta tiles, soft lighting and elegant fireplaces. Good food is taken seriously, be it an Acorn Inn homemade burger, or open lasagne of confit rabbit followed by twice cooked pork belly, and a warm sticky toffee pudding. Little ones have their own menu, and stacks of colouring books and crayons to keep them busy while they wait. Service is helpful and friendly.

"After a cold and (very) wet day, dinner at the Acorn Inn was just the warm blanket I very much needed! The lasagna with rabbit and leeks was one of the best starters I ever had! The local cheeses delicious and severed at the right temperature, well done. Staff were very friendly and professional. Prefect evening! "

"My husband, Bulldog Boris & I had a wonderful stay here. The welcome was amazing. All of the staff were really helpful & the hospitality was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff even realised I must be gluten free & they asked & provided gluten free bread etc. I was so impressed, our whole stay was faultless. We will most definitely be back & I would highly recommend."

"A beautiful and very ancient inn which exudes warmth and hospitality. I cannot speak highly enough of the Acorn Inn, its staff, the accommodation and the food. Everyone - from Reception, bar staff, and cleaning staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly and all went out of their way to ensure that I was looked after. My room was beautiful, with a four poster bed and views to the front, overlooking Fore Street. I had a wonderful evening meal and a delicious breakfast. I will be back!"
