Retreat from real-life and embrace the local way of life; laid-back. Good food and an easy atmosphere make this Dartmoor inn a treasure

This is the kind of place you could hang around all day. Lounge in the deep window seats and watch the river rush past or choose from the carefully selected pile of books or games. If you're feeling energetic, stomp the Drake’s Way, explore Cotehele and Buckland Abbey (both in throwing distance) or head to Burrator Reservoir for an easy-going walk winding through woodlands. Walkers need sustenance and this 18th-century pub delivers. The wine list is fantastic (from organic vineyards across Europe) and the menu creative; it’s short but packs a punch with interesting flavours. Kick back with the exceptional fish and chips and a glass of Devonian ale then, if you're still peckish, there's buttermilk panna cotta with blackberry compote to polish off. A traditional inn with one hell of a warm welcome from the team of locals manning the ship.

Local points of interest from
Beth Markwell:

  • The River Walkham flows past the pub, and rises and falls dramatically with the rains. From the ancient bridge, look for the salmon as they leap upstream to spawn in the autumn. Watch out for kingfishers and brown trout too!
  • Robin Armstrong is a local artist who was previously the river warden. He used to chase many of our regulars through the woods as they poached salmon from the river. Now he has a studio gallery within wallking distance of the pub, which is worth the walk.
  • Wildwood Arts is a local art gallery, focusing on showcasing the best of Dartmoor art. It's just across the footbridge, and is run by Cheri Hunston, a local artist who's work is exhibited in the pub.
  • The Leaping Salmon is nestled on the western edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Whether its a gentle stroll or a proper stomp you're after, there's a path for all. The air is fresh and the moor is wild and rugged.
  • To the back of the pub, a track leaves from the vegetable patch and climbs slowly out of the valley up into the hills. Just across the river lies Drake’s Trail, winding along the River Walkham towards the historic stannary town of Tavistock.
  • Birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, Tavistock is an ancient stannary town and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a pannier market that has been open for 900 years, and is surrounded by local shops, delis and cafes. There's also a great craft beer taproom..

Guest feedback
"A lovely renovation of an 18th-century pub in a traditional Dartmoor village. Fred has created a wonderful, relaxed space, the sort of place you can drop in for a quick drink or spend a whole day in one of the settles by the window. An amazing menu, lovely team and three calm, spacious rooms upstairs. Don't forget your boots - there are walks from the door."
