A busy, friendly, pubby hotel right on the quayside in Padstow, with comfortable carpeted bedrooms and scrumptious seafood on the menu

You can't miss it: the big square Custom House opposite the car park, right on Padstow's quay. It is sturdy, delightful and no doubt has weathered many a storm. Inside: a large bar on two levels with planked floors and timbered ceiling, background music and a big screen for sport. There's a coffee shop on the ground floor and a hairdressers above. The place buzzes with trippers, locals, children, dogs, and if you fancy pushing the boat out book into the restaurant, modern and stylish with muted colours and views down over the harbour. The menu is fish-led – of course – and there's a daily changing specials board: they follow the seasons here. Try crispy fried camembert with chilli jam; cassoulet with roasted tomatoes; fish pie with creamy saffron sauce. Then catch the ferry to Rock, and tiny St Enodoc church where John Betjeman is buried.

Local points of interest from
Linda Prior:

  • See the rugged coastline from a different perspective and search for seals, basking sharks, puffins and dolphins on a Sea Safari boat trip from Padstow Harbour. They can even pack you a picnic and whisk you off to a hidden cove for a spot of lunch.
  • The Camel Trail runs right to Padstow. This eighteen mile stretch of level, traffic-free trail that runs along a disused railway line is a haven for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
  • Discover a lovely church, half-hidden by the surrounding sand dunes. From the 16th to the 19th century, the church had almost completely disappeared and the vicar and worshippers had to climb in through the roof for services!
  • The Rock ferry runs every 20 minutes and will transport you across the estuary to this gorgeous boating haven. Popular with the rich and famous, Rock is now home to fancy boutiques and upscale restaurants.
