Simple, beautiful food and a welcome for all – walkers, tourists, families, dogs – on the main thoroughfare into Penzance. Unmissable

Between Marazion and Penzance (an hour’s walk between the two) is the Mexico Inn, an unlikely setting for a cracking food pub, and a feather in the cap for Longrock! This Cornish granite building, 200 years old and lovingly revived, faces the sea, with a small enclosed terrace at the rear. Tom Symons, ex Rick Stein, and partner chef Amy have infused the place with character and charm. Rustic plank floors run throughout, leather chairs gather round the wood-burner, and from the jolly bar doggie treats and pints of Tribute flow. Walls are pale granite, paintwork aqua-blue, up-cycled tables are rustic. Short seasonal menus promise whitebait and harissa mayo, celeriac and pancetta soup, haddock and chips, bangers and mash, superb Sunday roasts, vegetables cooked to perfection. The value is outstanding.
